I’ve been fooled a few times when I drive by on a Saturday morning and see a rush of people, only to realize that it’s the farmer’s market and not Bay Burger grilling some patties.

While The Corner has served as an adequate destination for a good burger, Bay Burger is still a great place to bring the kids or chill out during Thursday night Jazz.

After bidding farewell to our visiting family that night, we drove by the elementary school the next day where each of the passengers did a double-take and said, “Wow, look what happened to the playground.”  The play area of the elementary school was fenced off with orange construction dividers, there was a pay loader parked on the grass, and large signs declaring the playground was closed.  I immediately thought, “Good thing we didn’t try to walk over to the playground tonight.”

For a few weeks there was uncertainty as to what was going on with the space – there’s no way an elementary school could eliminate the playground, right?  There were also rumors that some snobby residents were complaining about children returning home and dragging playground sand onto the homeowner’s fancy wood floors (the old playground had sand under all of the playground equipment and swings).

No matter the actual reasoning behind the reconstruction, the result is a brand new, rubber-floored, modern playground with various new features and a new layout and design.  The main playground structure contains 3 slides, a fireman’s pole, and rock climbing wall.  Attached to the slide structure is a complex of numerous monkey bars and intricate mazes with rope-suspended balance platforms.

Outside the immediate playground area there is well-manicured grass, which may not withstand the beating it receives from the children, but adds a little color to the landscape.  Extended off the grassy field is a specially-designed hill with two slides embedded into the side of the slope.  Kids can run up the hill and slide down – a clever touch.  The swings are back, just in a different location (parallel with 114) with an updated look and contained by a box with wood chips.

Since autumn our family has thoroughly enjoyed the new playground and the bizarrely mild winter has provided us with even more days to take advantage of the new facility.  Since Mashashimuet playground is continuing to deteriorate (they recently removed the old wooden train from the grounds) and has shown no signs of improving, the Elementary School is your best bet for an outdoor playground in Sag Harbor.

Then this week, I came across a New York Times article focused on the Bulova renovation with an emphasis on the restoration of key parts of the original factory including the numerous arched windows and the since-reduced smoke stack.  The article also highlighted some of the features that we will see in the future – large underground parking garage, state-of-the-art fitness facility with a swimming pool (and a retractable roof).

While the progress on Sag Harbor’s longstanding eyesore is a promising change for the landscape, there are also concerns from critics about the nature of the building’s audience – do we really need another million-dollar apartment complex for all the summer folks to crowd the village?

In the end, any progress is good progress – no matter the socio-economic result of the project, anything built at the Bulova site is a marked improvement over the abandoned wasteland that it has been for 20+ years.  More to come, but Sag Harbor will definitely be different when this construction is wrapped up.

Research shows that bouts of vigorous exercise followed by weeks of inactivity can increase fat levels and put excess strain on your heart. In effect, leaving us exhausted both mentally and physically.

So what do we do? How do we stay interested in fitness?

Adopt a sustainable routine.  As a health and fitness nut I recommend that you adjust your mindset and adopt an effective, yet sustainable routine. Draw and erase and redraw the routines that you create for yourself; move slowly to create a masterpiece that is right for you until you feel it reach out and envelope you.

Rotate your workouts. We move to new cities, we change our jobs and clothes, so why not our workouts? If you wore the same sweater everyday, wouldn’t you grow sick and tired of it? Your appearance wouldn’t change and your mental attitude wouldn’t either.

Have the right playlist. Music changes the soul, it can help soothe our sore muscles and wakeup our legs & lunges for running. So remember to have the right playlist, the one that best suites what your body needs today. For the beautiful sculpting of Pilates, my students and I flow from one move to the next along to Adele and Diana Krall; we feel the burn, we are relaxed and in complete control of our breathe and thoughts. This improves blood flow to relieve cramping and keep us alert.

The next time you decide to jump back on the wagon for good, remember to choose a lifestyle that is realistic to you. You will feel and see results if you adjust your mind set and carefully create your fitness routine. Remember to rotate workouts to challenge the body and energize your mind. Be patient and enjoy this new journey. Look forward to each new workout, playlist and muscle defined as you walk a little taller, longer and leaner.

Get to know MSH’s October Harbor Hound ~ Lincoln!

Where did you find Lincoln? Or did Lincoln find you?

He was a rescue from a “puppy mill” in the Midwest, and was adopted from ARF in July of last year. He was used for stud services for the first two years of his life and was tied to the side of a cage for that time. The group that rescued him gave him the name Lincoln because he was sold for two cents at a dog auction.

What type of dog is Lincoln?

He is Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and part Cocker Spaniel. He was the result of the puppy mill trying to create a “designer dog”. He loves everyone, but is still a little shy, especially with men, probably as a result of his previous life.

And his treats of choice?

Lincoln likes apple flavored treats, but will generally eat anything that does not try to eat him first!!

Where we can find him lounging about?

Lincoln has made the space under the dining room table his “man cave” and brings all of his toys under the table. He also brings Ev’s slippers and socks there on a regular basis, usually when she leaves them within reach. He is a good alarm clock and makes sure everyone adheres to his schedule. In fact, he is beating me with his paw as I write this e-mail.

Favorite toy?

His favorite toy is Mark’s (Poitras’) dog Rudder. The fact that Rudder is 75 pounds and he is 22 pounds does not seem to bother him.

Who do you think Lincoln would most like to meet?

He has not told me the one person that he would like to meet, but I would assume that it would be the person with the most treats in his or her pockets!!!!

September 30, 2011 (Sag Harbor, NY) – Bay Street Theatre is getting ready for the LITERATURE LIVE production of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD Nov. 7-26. Local equity and non-equity actors are encouraged to audition. The production is adapted from the book by Harper Lee and will be directed by Murphy Davis.
